What You Need To Know About 5G Wireless and Microcells (“Small” Cells)

“We recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry…RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.”

There is currently a lot of concern being expressed on websites and in the media about 5G and millimetre-waves. Our current broadband cellular network platform, 4G (or fourth generation), allows us to transmit data faster then 3G and everything that preceded it.

Up until now broadband networks have been designed to meet the needs of the people.

5G signifies “5th generation” wireless technology. It is said to provide faster and higher transmission capacity. It has been created with machines needs in mind, offering low-latency (delay), high efficiency data transfer. Where as 4G has a fifty millisecond delay, 5G data will offer a mere one – millisecond delay – we humans wont notice a difference, but it will permit machines such as driverless cars, AI and the Internet of Things (IoT), to achieve near seamless communication.

4G is able to connect a million devices in 500 square kilometres.

5G will be able to connect a million devices in 1 square kilometre.

More Bandwidth

Faster processing speeds require more bandwidth, yet our current bandwidths are becoming saturated. The idea behind 5G is to use untapped bandwidth of the extremely high frequency millimetre wave( MMW), between 30GHz and 300GHz, in addition to some lower and midrange frequencies.

High-frequency MMWs travel a short distance. Furthermore, they don’t travel well through buildings and tend to be absorbed by rain and plants, leading to signal interference. Thus, the necessary infrastructure would require many smaller, barely noticeable cell towers situated closer together, with more input and output ports than there are on the much larger, easier to see 4G towers. This would likely result in wireless antennas every few feet, on every lamp post and utility pole in your neighbourhood beaming potentially hazardous radiation next to, or into our homes, schools, work places and everywhere, 24/7.

To put that into perspective, there are currently over 50,000 mobile phone masts in the UK. 5G would require exponentially more, smaller ones, placed much closer together, with each emitting bursts of RFR, granted, at levels much lower then that of a 4G tower, but they will be harder to avoid as these microcells will be more common place.

5G radiation will be sent from advanced antennas, so called phased arrays, that transmit the microwaves and/or millimeter waves in narrow bands, a technology originally developed for military purposes. This will massively increase the exposure to radiation in those beams, that will be nearly everywhere.

5G will add to – not replace – our current wireless technology bandwidth.

5G will add in another layer of wireless radiation to our environment. 5G will not only utilise wireless frequencies already in use but will add in the higher frequencies – MMW and sub-millimetre waves, in order to transmit data at super fast speeds.

When is this happening?

Originally it was stated that it would be unlikely that there would be a widespread rollout of any 5G networks before about 2020. The EEC hoped that viable commercial existing band (up to 6GHz) 5G networks would be in operation by the end of 2020. The focus would be on public places initially such as CBD’s and shopping areas. However, there is much evidence of areas around the world where this is advancing faster then people may be aware. The USA is a classic example with evidence of a roll out since 2017.

EE has announced that it will switch on 5G in 16 UK cities in 2019.

EE is a subsidiary of BT (British Telecom) standing for “ Everything Everywhere’. The company is yet to reveal any specific dates, but says the launch will be split into two phases. The first 5G launch cities will be London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham.

It will then switch on sites in 10 more cities: Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol.

Community authority overruled

Recent reports through the Environmental Health Trust in the US have shown that communities are being stripped of their right to make decisions about this new technology. “ Streamlining ” means almost automatic approval. Public notice and public hearings are being eliminated. Even if every homeowner on the street opposes the antennas on their street, the opposition will be disregarded.

What the scientists say

According to Dr Joel Moskowitz, a public health professor at the University of California, Berkeley, MMWs could pose a very real danger.

‘The deployment of 5G, or fifth generation cellular technology, constitutes a massive experiment on the health of all species,’

Because MMWs are weaker than microwaves, they are predominantly absorbed by the skin, meaning their distribution is quite focused there,

‘Since skin contains capillaries and nerve endings, MMW bio-effects may be transmitted through molecular mechanisms by the skin or through the nervous system,’ Dr Moskowitz writes on his blog.

He is also concerned that ‘5G will use high-band frequencies, or millimetre waves, that may affect the eyes, the testes, the skin, the peripheral nervous system, and sweat glands.’  ‘Millimetre waves can also make some pathogens resistant to antibiotics,’ he added.

Dr Moskowitz is not alone in his apprehensions.

The International Society of Doctors for the Environment, its subsidiaries in 27 countries and more than 200 doctors and scientists are all calling for a stop to be put to the roll out of 5G, ‘due to concern that 5G radio frequency radiation will have adverse health effects,’ Dr Moskowitz says.

So far, their warnings have gone unheeded.

The massive increase of radiation is observed in a scientific paper* published in 2017:

“Our results show that 5G downlink RF fields generate significantly higher power density (PD) and specific absorption rate (SAR) than a current cellular system.”…Thus, when a larger phased antenna is used or when a user moves closer to the AP, the PD value becomes a major health concern which inevitably requires more research about health effects of 5G before it is deployed successfully by strictly following the RF emission standards.”

A substantial and convincing amount of scientific studies show many adverse health effects and health hazards from radiofrequency/microwave radiation.

No evaluation of health effects nor of effects on the wildlife and the environment has been undertaken. There is no research showing safety neither from 5G alone, nor from the combined exposure to 5G + already existing radiation from GSM, 3G, WiFi, 4G etc.

In summary

  • 5G will massively increase the microwave & millimetre wave radiation in our environment.
  • It will also use new frequencies that are not evaluated by experts independent from industry as to their safety.
  • 5G will include the higher millimetre wave frequencies, previously used for crowd control for instance.
  • The millimetre waves do not travel easily through buildings so 5G will require millions of new “small cell” antennas.
  • 5G expansion, will require the construction of cell towers every 10-20 houses in urban areas via use of lamp posts & street furniture.
  • Scientists are asking for a moratorium on the increase of 5G, citing human health effects and impacts to wildlife.
